Green Hysland hydrogen reaches the sea: first recreational boat refuelling in Mallorca

Green Hysland is helping Mallorca’s green hydrogen ecosystem expand into new applications, with the first refuelling of a recreational boat with green hydrogen taking place in a Balearic port.

Mallorca has taken another step towards the decarbonisation of maritime transport, with the first refuelling of a recreational boat with green hydrogen in the Port of Alcúdia. The demonstration was carried out by Spanish company Dhamma Blue with the support of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB), using green hydrogen produced locally at the hydrogen plant in Lloseta.

The plant was developed through Green Hysland and is operated by Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca (P2GH2M). The company not only operates the facility, but also supplies locally produced renewable hydrogen to new applications, including this maritime demonstration.

From Lloseta to the Port of Alcúdia

The demonstration used the DHB-P01, Spain’s first recreational boat powered by hydrogen. The vessel was refuelled using a compact hydrogen dispenser developed by German engineering company Argo-Anleg.

For Sebastián Barceló Vidal, General Manager of Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca, the new application illustrates the value of the foundations established through Green Hysland:

“From the plant’s perspective, we are very pleased to see how the initial ecosystem created by Green Hysland is helping to pave the way for new initiatives such as this one, with whom we share a common vision and goals towards transport decarbonisation.”

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, also a Green Hysland partner, supported the demonstration as part of its work to reduce the environmental impact of maritime activities and explore more sustainable energy solutions for its ports.

The refuelling point, located near Alcudiamar Marina Resort, will enable further navigation and refuelling demonstrations by the DHB-P01.

Hydrogen-powered navigation

The DHB-P01 combines an electric drivetrain with a hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen and oxygen are used in the fuel cell to generate electricity for the electric motor, enabling quiet navigation with no direct emissions during operation.

The vessel has an estimated range of around 65 nautical miles at 12 knots and can reach a maximum speed of 28 knots.

Dhamma Blue is also working on applications for other types of maritime vessels, including passenger boats, water taxis and work and service vessels. The demonstration in Alcúdia provides an opportunity to explore how hydrogen technology and refuelling infrastructure can be integrated into a real port environment.

Building on the Green Hysland ecosystem

The Alcúdia demonstration is one of the new activities emerging around Mallorca’s hydrogen infrastructure. By making renewable hydrogen available locally, the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca plant can serve different users and help explore new applications across sectors.

For maritime transport, this is particularly relevant for vessels and uses where direct electrification can be challenging. As the island’s hydrogen ecosystem develops, new initiatives can build on the infrastructure, experience and partnerships already in place.

From Green Hysland’s hydrogen production infrastructure in Lloseta to a hydrogen-powered vessel in Alcúdia, Mallorca is demonstrating how renewable hydrogen can connect local energy production with new clean mobility solutions.
