On May 20 to 21, the Clean Energy for EU island Forum 2021 took place. The annual meeting gathers representatives from EU islands, academics, stakeholders and high-level EU representatives.

EU Commissioner, Kadri Simson, opened the Forum reiterating European islands’ role in the energy transition: “[Islands] have small and isolated energy systems. But they can also be perfect real-life laboratories for the deployment of new innovative solutions.” With the upcoming Commission’s legislative package “Fit for 55”, the energy transition is about to move faster. Islands have a real potential to take part in the transition and harness their natural resources. Read the full speech.

The Forum features many inspiring stories and projects from islands all across Europe. The two-day event provided participants with discussions about the clean energy transition of islands, sessions about funding and workshops to inspire and share projects pitches for energy transition.
