The Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (JU – former FCH JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research and innovation (R&I) activities in hydrogen technologies in Europe.
The Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realising their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-clean energy system.
Fuel cells, as an efficient conversion technology, and hydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, have a great potential to help fight carbon dioxide emissions, to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons and to contribute to economic growth. The objective of the FCH JU is to bring these benefits to Europeans through a concentrated effort from all sectors.
The three members of the JU are the European Commission, fuel cell and hydrogen industries represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.
The Council of the European Union formally agreed on the 6th May 2014 to continue the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative and to extend funding under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. This phase will run until 2020 and has a total matched budget of at least €1.33 bill. provided by the public-private trio – the European Commission, the industry grouping Hydrogen Europe and the research grouping Hydrogen Europe Research. The vision sets to develop by 2020 a portfolio of clean, efficient and affordable solutions that exploit the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier and fuel cells as energy converters, to the point of market readiness.
The JU is also the institution who is providing EU funds to implement the Green Hysland project. The EU contribution to the project amounts to € 20 498 255, and will greatly help the consortium in the implementation of the pilot project and the development of replication activities.
Learn how the Green Hysland project is breaking new ground with the first-ever injection of green hydrogen into Spain’s gas grid, showcasing innovative technologies for a more sustainable energy future in Mallorca.
On 5 October 2023, the Green Hysland project hosted its 3rd workshop, “Setting up Hydrogen Valleys in Europe,” on Vlieland Island in Fryslân, NL. From Vlieland to Europe, this event explored transformative strategies in Hydrogen Valley development engaged through practical insights expert support.
In the frame of the Green Hysland project, Iberostar and Redexis have signed an agreement by which Redexis will install a fuel cell to consume green hydrogen and produce thermal and electrical energy.
