Launch of TwInSolar: a new project on the integration of solar energy in insular territories

TwInSolar aims at enhancing research and innovation to reach a massive integration of solar renewables in Reunion Island, a French outermost region located in the Southwest Indian Ocean Sea basin. Another objective of the TwInSolar project is to strengthen the visibility and attractiveness of the research laboratory Physics and Mathematical Engineering for Energy, the Environment and Buildings – PIMENT of the University of La Réunion. 

This project also supports the efforts of other insular territories and remote areas to build a decarbonised & self-sufficient energy system. The CPMR Islands Commission leads the communication and dissemination of activities towards European Islands and will also develop synergies with key actors to promote the replication of results, together with Reunion Island’s Regional Research and Innovation Agency – Nexa. Capacity building and knowledge transfer activities will be delivered through exchanges the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), which are internationally renowned research institutions.  

The kick-off meeting of the TwInSolar project took place on 19-20 September 2022 in Freiburg, Germany. Partner representatives from the project consortium were hosted by the Fraunhofer ISE and discussed the project workplan, deliverables and upcoming activities. This trip to mainland Europe also provided an opportunity for the delegation of researchers from the PIMENT to proceed to their first study visits of the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg, Germany and the DTU installations in Denmark.
