On the 1st of February, the board of directors of EMT, The Municipal Bus Company of Palma, awarded the company Solaris Bus Iberica the supply of the five buses with a green hydrogen battery for an amount of 3,935,000 euros.
EMT Palma issued the tender for the construction of the five buses in July 2021. The awarded company, Solaris Bus Iberica Solaris Bus & Coach, will supply the buses for a total contract value of €3,935 million. This process is part of the Green Hysland project, more specifically in relation to our pilot site on Transport applications at the EMT bus depot.
The 5 electric buses of 12 meters with green hydrogen battery have a capacity of more than 90 passengers. These buses are buses of the latest generation, premiered in 2019, at the World Public Transport Summit in Stockholm. One of the main advantages with respect to electric buses is their autonomy throughout the day and improvement in passing capacity.
The acquisition of these five new buses will be funded by the Balearic Government through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Productive Sectors and these vehicles will be fed with part of the hydrogen that will be produced at the Lloseta plant, which will become an example for climate neutrality, decarbonisation and environmental protection that the Government is promoting.

The Deputy Mayor for Sustainable Mobility, Francesc Dalmau, is very positive that steps are still being taken for the arrival of these new buses and their integration into the EMT fleet. “This legislature will have renewed almost the entire bus fleet and with this award we are taking another step towards integrating zero-emission energy into the EMT’s fleet that other EMTs such as Barcelona and Madrid are incorporating,” said Dalmau.
The new electric buses with green hydrogen battery will be 12-meter electrically powered vehicles, which have hydrogen cells to generate electricity on board continuously from hydrogen, and therefore generate zero emissions. These vehicles have the advantage of not being conditioned to fixed infrastructure during the day and recharging is carried out in garages in an agile recharging process.
